Many of you may be aware that Jean Rebbitt, one of our most experienced CSR's (Customer Services Representative) will be retiring at the end of April, for a well-deserved life of relaxation. Jean has been with us for many years and has been a valuable member of the team. She will be missed by clients and staff alike.

Rather than waiting until Jean leaves us to recruit a replacement, we have already taken on a new CSR.

So a big welcome to Anne Chesterton.

Anne joins us from M-Four (Manchester City Council's full service in-house communications agency) and brings with her a wealth of print related experience. She worked as an Account Executive at M-Four for 3 years and before that worked for Manchester Print Graphics (for 6 years).

Anne is also currently studying for a Professional Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Our new online file sharing and storage website is now live at www.pelicanfiles.co.uk.

The site is accessible from any computer which has web access, and we are giving our customers a huge 200MB of FREE online storage space! This means that no matter where you are you will always be able to access your important files.

We have developed this site primarily to help our customers send us large artwork files. The simplified web based console replaces the problematic and sometimes long winded use of FTP software, so if you ever need to send us artwork, click here to sign up.

You can edit, organise, preview, add notes and rename files, all online. If you want to share a file with someone else, you can even use the “Hotlink” facility to email them a direct link to the file you want to share. We can even put electronic proofs of your print jobs on your web space, so you can review them wherever you are.

If you need more substantial online storage space, we can offer 1 Terabyte (that’s over a million megabytes!!) bundles of secure online storage from as little as £40 per month.

Are you still using FTP to send us artwork?
The new system is a huge improvement on traditional FTP file transfers. If you have an existing FTP account which you use to send us artwork files, don’t panic. The old FTP site will remain active for at least a month. If you are an active user, we will set you up an account on the new system, transfer all your files and send you your new login details.

Pelican Press Continues to Grow

Manchester Printing business Pelican Press has added a number of key appointments to further aid its rapid growth. Mike White and Dave Flanagan join as Marketing Manager and Account Manager respectively.

Mike has 16 years Marketing experience and in addition to being responsible for Pelican’s own marketing, will work on a number of customer projects, including our web to print installations.

Mike says “I am looking forward to working with and helping Pelican’s enthusiastic team. I joined because of their forward looking attitude in working towards becoming a Marketing communications company rather than just another printer.”

 

Dave Flanagan has over 20 years sales experience in the North West of England and has an extensive knowledge of the North West print community.

Yes I know it sounds corny but Manchester Print business Pelican Press  has it's very first entrant into the London Marathon. Our Studio Manager Anthony Green has just been accepted into next years race.

 Anthony comments " it has always been an ambition of mine to run a

 marathon and to be accepted into the London Marathon is amazing. I

 hope to raise over £1000 for my chosen charity, Cancer Research UK.

 Now the hard work starts with some serious training over the winter!"

Pelican Press are truly the fastest printers in Manchester. When asked by a large Accountancy group to produce a marketing pack for them in just 5 hours we were up to the challenge.

The project involved two perfect bound books, one 60 pages the other 56 pages, both with a matt laminated cover, a die cut folder and a 20 page saddle stitched booklet, the quantities were small (less than 20) but the quality had to be the best.

Artwork was recieved at 12 noon and proofs were uploaded to the client within the hour, the folder was litho printed, laminated and die cut from an existing forme. The covers for the perfect bound books were printed first on an Indigo 5500, this was followed by their text pages, all collated in page order. The saddle stitched job was printed last.

Finishing was completed on Horizon binding equipment and delivery was via our van to central Manchester, the complete job being delivered at 4:40pm.

Wiro Binding Installation for Manchester Printing Company

Pelican Press has invested again; purchasing an automated wiro (or wire-o) binding line to complement our perfect binding line. The £30,000 investment is part of an on-going plan to bring more services in-house. Chief Executive Ian Crow comments:

" Wiro binding has been a process that has always taken a long time. We have always worked with excellent suppliers, but their business has always been feast or famine. In the lead up to Xmas it is almost impossible to get a wiro job placed due to calendar production and similarly during the late summer when school diaries and notebooks are often produced.

By bringing the process in-house we can control the job and give our customers faster turnarounds on this sort of work. The set up on the binder is in minutes, allowing us to swap between jobs very quickly. We are producing lots of short run report and brochures on our Indigo digital press and being able to wiro bind them so quickly is great for the customer. It is a great cost effective alternative to perfect binding, especially on small quantities.

We can also do much longer runs having recently completed 21000 A5 Directories in a week. The investment in wiro binding brings total investment in new services in the last 12 months to over £350,000, including the installation last July of our Indigo 5500."

We can wiro bind from A6 to A3 with books up to 25mm thick and offer a wide range of coloured wires and alternative binds such as half canadian. We can also cut half moons and add calendar hangers too.

In fact we are the only printer in the North West to offer the service and over the years our team of perfect binding experts have produced job after job of high quality perfect bound work.

Our perfect binding line is working as well as it did on the first day we used it. It is ideal for run lengths up to 20,000. We have 18 feeders; meaning we can bind 144 pages plus a cover in one pass and we can produce 12-15,000 books a day.

The system applies two types of glue to the book. A spine glue is applied to the spine(!), this glue is super strong and we give a guarantee that your book will not fall apart; the glue is applied evenly giving a great looking finish to your book. A side glue is applied to the cover so that the cover sticks to the first and last text page and allow a hinge to form to open the book.

The perfect binding process is fraught with technical problems, not just in the binding. Thought needs to go into the layout of the job in pre-press and how the job is printed, especially what type of inks and coatings are suitable.

That is why we do not take on any trade work. All the work we perfect bind is printed on our Heidelberg 10-colour and 5-colour printing presses. We can control the quality from start to finish meaning you get a fantastic product at the end.
